A complete ban on virtual private networks has been established for a duration of two months in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. Local authorities justified this measure by the need to ensure cybersecurity, combat illegal activities, and preserve public order.
Reasons for implementing strict restrictions
District Magistrate Krishan Lal issued the directive on September 5, 2026, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The administration believes that certain individuals and groups use such technologies to bypass digital restrictions, access blocked platforms, and coordinate actions that could compromise national security.
The restriction affects residents, commercial entities, internet cafes, organizations, and internet service providers. The only exceptions are cases with explicit, official authorization from the government. Violators will face legal consequences, and the local senior superintendent of police is tasked with enforcing the order.
