How VPN restrictions will affect Russian internet traffic

Restrictions on VPN services will not lead to a decrease in internet traffic in Russia. This opinion was expressed by Alexey Volin, General Director of the Space Communications enterprise, at an industry conference in Nizhny Novgorod. According to him, blocking individual resources only forces users to switch to alternative platforms, which ultimately stimulates traffic growth.
Development of alternative platforms and blocking statistics
The specialist pointed out the active development of Russian services, including Rutube, which successfully replace unavailable resources. Despite this, user interest in tools for bypassing blocks remains high. By January 2026, 439 such services faced restrictions in the country, which is 70 percent more compared to the autumn of 2025, when this figure was 258.
Global traffic growth and new technologies
Forecasts indicate a multiple increase in transmitted data volumes by 2030. In Russia, total internet traffic is expected to grow two and a half times, video streaming consumption will double, and global video traffic will triple.
